Just as humankind eventually caught up with the Hitchhiker’s Guide (now the iPad and its many siblings), so too have we finally built Deep Thought (renamed the Large Hadron Collider).
The physics behind it all is well out of our grasp, but the film helps us understand the encrypted language (of mathematics, particles and beams) in a way that will help us to mimic intelligence at dinner parties.
Mark Levinson follows a sample of eloquent nerds for whom the Ultimate Answer will have special significance. Through their eyes, we see the poetry behind the numbers and the emotional and quasi-spiritual impetus behind the quest.
Perhaps scientists are the true philosophers, searchers and artists.
Particle Fever is beautifully made and easy to watch. It brings those of us with sub-genius IQ up to speed with what is really happening now.
The Ultimate Answer? As the descendants of the founding mothers and fathers gather in anticipation, we find (just as Douglas did) that the answer is a number, albeit a different one, and that we are still in search of the question.
The music and mystery of science will continue.
