‘Tales of Us’, by Goldfrapp

March 30, 2014 by Me and My Monkeys

Front cover of Goldfrapp's 'Tales of Us'Tales of Us sounds like it always existed. It’s as if we’re remembering it rather than listening for the first time. And they are happy memories.

The whole album – the whole experience – is like meditating in zero gravity. Misty and drowsy and beautifully thoughtless.

Track one (‘Jo’) is a hypnotic place to start, as Alison G puts our minds on the couch and begins her therapy. She is a kind doctor, whispering answers rather than questions. “Every word is soft as fur”.

The track list reads like a little black book, each name healing and revealing. Each song a piece of a life that could be ours. “I’m drifting deep, deeper in”.

Her spell survives the brief tempo shift of ‘Thea’ and lulls us for a few precious minutes before we wake, afresh, at just the right point of our sleep cycle.

Recommended? Yes.

Out of 10? 8

My monkeys suggest:

  • Watch Goldfrapp TV playlist below, followed by Alison referencing David Lynch and Night of the Hunter

Ooh, what a great description “sounds like it always existed.” I love this album. It is so gentle and thoughtful and sincere.
