‘Carré Blanc’, by Jean-Baptiste Leonetti

There’s nothing like a bit of dystopia in a film, so I gave Carré Blanc every chance.

I must confess that I was tempted to get all art school and give an unlikely thumbs up to a film that throws cannibalism and psycho-terror at you while making a Zoolander face.

The trouble is, I think Carré Blanc is meant to be serious. If so, there are a tad too many plausibility gaps to go along for this dystopian ride. Mobile phones and wedding rings suggest that Leonetti’s universe is not too far removed from our own, but there is no sense of how the business-as-usual world fits in with the human lab tests and packaged human flesh.

Some will mention Orwell. Don’t listen to them. To suggest similarities with 1984 would be a slap in the face to the novel, the film and to reality TV.

Carré Blanc tries to do too much and ultimately goes very close to doing nothing at all.

Recommended? Depends on your threshold for made up stuff that doesn’t make much sense.
